Surface tension is an important physical property which determines parameters such as droplet size and substrate adhesion. Droplet size is one of the most important factors when maximizing the spray application for crop protection with herbicides, fungicides and insecticides on farmland. The droplet size should be dependent on the biology and life cycle of the pest as well as other factors like macro- and micro-climatic interactions and wind speed. Static surface tension is an important property to determine drop formation from the various spray nozzles used. The surface tension should be tailored for all these factors to make the best formulation. For example, a low surface tension from an air blast sprayer can result in too small a droplet to travel long distances so the target crops are not reached. Too high a surface tension, e.g. from a hydraulic sprayer may cause the droplet not to dissipate also leading the pesticide not to reach its target.
